Algae are autotrophic organisms that can range from being single-celled bacteria or mountainous towers of kelp. Despite their similarities, such containing chlorophyll, algae and plants are two different things. This is because algae lack true roots, leaves, and stems. Algae are important in aquatic environments because they produce oxygen for other organisms and make up the base of foodwebs in many aquatic ecosystems.
